Responsive Design, Why Does It Really Matter

A responsive design is that which changes the layout to adapt a website to formats of desktops, smartphones, and tablets. When a website adheres to responsiveness, it increases its ranking, flexibility, and reduces its management costs. With such, responsive design matters.

The responsive design is an important ranking factor. A company can use search engine optimization as a strategy to boost itself in Google’s search page rankings. The reason is that, since 2015, Google ranks websites in its search engine algorithms based on the websites’ mobile-friendliness. Thus, if a website is closer to the top, it has a higher potential for attracting consumers, given that  Google gives preference to the more mobile-friendly websites. Moreover, a responsive design makes social sharing easier, enabling companies to develop a bigger audience.

With a responsive design, all pages and content are flexible across different devices and screen resolutions. This implies that the content and pages are unified and easy to navigate regardless of the end user’s device (Macaulay, 2017). Flexible images and text adjust within the layout width, thus minimizing scrolling and resizing. The flexibility is also advantageous for the designers because it enables them to make changes easily and quickly. One does not need to make changes twice, especially when making a quick design tweak because a change in one layout translates to the other.

The responsive design saves costs by eliminating the expenses of having to pay for a mobile site. Compared to having two separate sites, a responsive design saves on cost by saving on the resources used in creating a mobile version of the website alongside the existing desktop website (Studio, 2018). Maintaining separate sites for the non-mobile and mobile users can get expensive because it requires hiring additional designers and increased maintenance costs needed to manage the new aspects. Therefore, responsiveness takes much cost out of a business websiteThe responsive design saves costs by eliminating the expenses of having to pay for a mobile site.
