Transgender occurs when a person’s gender does not conform with the sex they are accustomed to at birth. My knowledge about transgender people was not vast until I came across the readings and the Video in this course. I thought that transgender people are the ones who chose to go against the social norms, but it turns out most of them are forced by their bodies to change their identities. I also assumed that transgender people had mental issues, which I later came to understand is not the case. My attitude towards transgender before made me wonder and dislike such people. .Some ideas that come out include the media creating false stereotypes about transgender people, such as portraying them as women wearing heels (Serano, 2007). Another clear theme is about language, whereby the use of a particular language to describe transgender may hurt them directly (Feinberg, 1992). Many people are violent to transgender people due to their elevation away from the societal norms, which is interpreted as deviancy. Transgender rights are also advocated for to help these people access public facilities without discrimination (Marquette Wire, 2015). Lastly, The significant idea that is evident throughout is that gender is socially constructed, whereby one is expected to perform the roles of his sexual orientation (Clement, 2019). The concept of controlling one’s hormones while undergoing surgery is new to me. However, I was conversant with the surgical process of aligning one’s body parts to the sexual orientation that befits them. Despite the information provided in the readings, I don’t understand the process through which a person may be born male but possess traits of the feminine family and vice versa. The connection of the learning outcomes revolves around acknowledging transgender rights and showing love to them since deep down, and they did not choose to be born in such a condition. Besides, it is not fair for one to live a life which one may feel is not appreciated or represented
