The team leader, Rebecca, realized that the team members were not ready to share the respective data of their companies. The leader tried to solve the situation by involving some fun moments. She thought that the team members were afraid of each other. However, the condition worsened after some time. The team members were reluctant to pick calls. They were not free to speak during meetings.
She should have given the members the time to know each other. The session would have enabled the team members to understand each other. The sessions should have helped build on the confidence of the members. Korean workers do not have the freedom to share any information about the organization within which they work. Instead, they have to seek approval from top management to outsource such valuable information. On the other hand, Japanese workers are facing a sanction concerning data protection. The country is enforcing harsh data security regulations. Both workers were in the same situation that deemed them inactive in the team.
Virtual team leaders should recognize the diversity in their teams. Like Rebecca, many leaders do not accept and appreciate the various cultures in organizations. They are giving the team members a chance to interact and know each other. Team members should also try to understand and learn the cultural differences in each one of them. Generally, the whole team should understand each other, both the leaders and the members.
The activeness of the members can only achieve the efficiency of a virtual team. The primary step is to create a standard and free communication platform for everyone. The members should also find some time for each other and to understand the various backgrounds. Getting to know and understand one another in the team creates room for all members to be free and open. Everyone will be open and honest and ready to work. In this way, the team will be thoroughly efficient.
