A Clockwork Orange

The graphic representation on the cover design is literal. It conveys a lot of information contained in the book. This is critical for it makes the general thematic concerns depicted in the book be understood easily by the reader. The connection of the graphic design and the text itself also summarizes on what is expected in the text itself. For the case of “A Clockwork Orange” by Antony Burgess, the main idea here is the representation of the oppressive society during the times of Antony as an academic in one of the universities in the United States. The order of events right from debates on capitalism to communism to moral ethics is actually what inspired the author to design this form of text which touches on the oppressive side of the society that we live. Antony himself is a full liberated man who has written the novel to express his feelings about the failed society to honour the need for liberation and democracy for all people in different spheres of the world. That the reason why the loud mouth featured in the graphic design can best be linked to the whole idea in the text, which can be summarized by free minds for free states and not violence. Therefore it is essential to analyze the graphic design closely to establish its connection with the whole idea portrayed inside the text as well as understand how the graphic design covers the extended literal meaning of the novel.

The protagonist of the text, Alex who serves as the mouthpiece of the oppressed youth in the society give detailed events that teenagers are likely to undergo especially if the society fails to recognize the existence of the young people and their needs such as freedom and economic opportunities. Alex himself is rebellious to the society norms for many reasons. The society Alex lives in seems to be oppressive enough to deny the youths opportunities to live a useful, meaningful life (Burgess, Anthony, pp.56). His criminal behaviours can best be linked the peer pressure group that he operates together with in terms of abusing dangerous narcotic drugs. The squad comprised of the three drools; Pete, Georgie and Dim is a representation of the young generation which in the current world it has turned to destructive forms of survival due to lack of their space in the society.

The governments have failed to honour the role and existence of youth by failing to create opportunities. The graphic design connects to the events that follow Alex in his life as a young person. The kind of gang life Alex chooses to live land Alex under challenging situations that makes him end up imprisoned. For example, after the murder, Alex is imprisoned. He feels lacking words to express how the world I being unfair to him by not offering opportunities something which has landed him in the wrong company for survival tactics.

The graphic picture of loud cry with burning head is a  clear extension of meaning of the text which literary means that apart from the troubles Alex faces while in prison his mind is still burning of many ideas on the society itself has failed to create a meaningful space for Alex among other young people to live and enjoy like the rest of the society members The graphic cover design literary creates an impression of oppression in the society in which in our case it is directed to the young people who lack opportunities to improve their lives thus ending in immoral behaviours such as drug and substance abuse which may lead suffering (Ray, Philip E, pp. 71).

The literal meaning of the graphic design still connects with the continued lack of meaningful attention to the young people represented in the text by Alex and the droogs. For example according to chapter five of the “A Clockwork Orange,” by Antony, it is clear that when Alex is taken to prison, the only thing meaningful he receives is the aversive therapy but which did not help him after he was out jail. The treatment was administered only to support a behavioural change from criminal life to moral or ethical life. Though Alex is exposed to many modes of aversive therapy such as watching films on atrocities in Germany, this does not assist in changing behaviour. After being out of prison, Alex decides to go back to his old immoral behaviours of drugs and crime. The reason here is glued to the continued state of lack of opportunities in the society, and this is something which cannot be covered by giving the young people behaviour modification therapies at the prisons.

According to the text “A clockwork orange” the duke of New York has taken control over significant areas that can be operated by Alex and the droogs; Pete, Georgie and Dim. The duke is there to exploit this young gang. For this reason, the meaning portrayed by the oppressive society is reflected by the fire in flames captured in the graphic design, which means that the society is not ready to accommodate the youth and nurture them. However, the struggle for young people still goes on (Bryfonski, pp. 39). Violence in the contemporary world is not something to be ignored. Nowadays, a large population of young people are in a continuous struggle to create their space in society. This has led to criminal activities, drug abuse, among other immoral, violent evils. The forces behind these violent acts are due to lack of social space and opportunities to better their lives.

In conclusion, Alex being a representative of the oppressed youth feels oppressed by the society that fails to honour his existence and that of his troop, the three droogs. This feeling of oppression by society is what sprouts the immoral behaviours exhibited by Alex and the droogs. There is a need for the creation of social space for the youths everywhere in the world to enable them to live a productive, moral life.
