Body image
Body image involves how individuals see themselves regarding feelings, related thoughts and self-appearance. It can be influenced by variables like media, culture, and social pressure, among others. Disturbance of body image is essential because it results in severe psychological or physical health problems. Body image is a crucial issue among the dancers since they have to compare their looks with other peers. The body flaws that many dancers are preoccupied with makes a good number of them to be affected with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). Also, they find themselves believing they have more weight, but in reality, it is not true—the act results in eating disorders problem since they want to lose weight. Most of the cultural values have introduced masculine men and thin women as success models, attraction and having good health. In the past, fatty women were considered to be more attractive since people believed fat body symbolizes fertility, health and wealth. Human society in the current world has placed individuals human body beauty at a great value. Still, people perception of their bodies may fail to correspond to the social standard.
Society believes that when a person is beautiful in sports, then he or she will always be useful in dancing. Bill T. Jones was right when he explained how blacks who participate in games have right moves; therefore, qualifies to be the best dancers. Also, the massive and lightweight body does not matter when it comes to dancing. Fat and thin people are equal, and they can perform at all dance levels since the moves are mainly tactical; thus can be done by anyone. Jones, in his talk, said that a lightweight individual lifted him with ease; it shows that weight does not matter.
Furthermore, politics can either motivate a person or lower dignity of a person. Most of the dancing categories do not give chances to fat-bodied people to perform in stage since it upholds their status quo; this is political rather than artistic. Bill said that some celebrities stood up without fear of their fat bodies and shows their nudity freely. It makes many people believe that fat body can compete fairly with others, and they are equally powerful, graceful and athletic. In conclusion, society has settled their mindset on what perfect individual body is and how dancers fight to achieve. Also, fat bodies should be given an equal chance to compete with others in all competitions.
