Bradford’s Of Plymouth Plantation Hello Everyone, How would you describe the character of the Pilgrims / Puritans? The Pilgrims had broken away from the Anglican Church of England and were called Separatists. While puritans of 1630 wanted to remain a part of the Anglican Church, but they gradually moved to complete separation of church and state. Puritans and pilgrims finally joined into one colony. The pilgrims/Puritans shared several characteristics which include: they thought themselves a chosen people, opposed pleasure and arts, were intolerant of others not of their views, made laws about private morality, and drove from their colonies all who disagreed with them. For example, Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts Bay Colony in winter for his views on religious toleration. They were patriotic. The main reason the Pilgrims/Puritans moved to America was to have the freedom to worship, and they did not mind being under the colonists as long as they had the right to worship. They were also fed up with their children working. Another leader, William Bradford, said they were becoming “decrepit in their early youth;…
Seinfeld Film Analysis Defense Mechanisms Enacted by George Defense mechanisms are deployed when an individual feels uncomfortable or anxious about a situation. Repression, denial, projection, displacement, regression, and sublimation are different types of defense mechanisms (Mcleod). George showcases denial when he defends his actions during a fire. George dashes out of the room, pushing away people that included women and older adults. Everyone around him insists that his actions depict selfish behavior, but he denies it by feigning safety, equality, and leadership for the people involved. During a hiking plan involving him and his friend, George insists that he is alright when a third person is enlisted in the hike. It is obvious George is not pleased by the addition of a third person, but he pretends to be happy and okay with the new situation (Psychoanalyzing George Costanza). He also exhibits projection whereby he insists that the waitress and passerby driver show him the middle finger. In both scenarios, George is convinced that the waitress and the driver do not like him, hence the obscene gesture made towards…
Compare and Contrast How Culture Has Changed In the Last 80 Years Introduction Culture refers to how people behave as relates to beliefs and values in a particular society. Culture evolves as different factors change. These include social norms change, for example, brought about by age difference. As different generations come and go, differences in culture become evident as well. Technology and digital media, for example, has affected different generations at varying degrees. Parents and teachers, for example, have acknowledged the impact digital media has on preschool children on the lower scale of the third generation (Ihmeideh & Alkhawaldeh, 2017). Print, electronic advertising, and music have changed over the years. The purpose of the paper is to give insight into how these mediums have changed over the years. Generation 1: the 1940’s and 1960’s Print Media Print media in the 1940s included newspapers and postcards, for example. Newspapers were used for information purposes and kept the public updated on current news. News on the war, for example, was documented in the publications. Job opportunities were also advertised in the…
Analyzing Bias on Both Sides of an Issue Gun Control/ Safety Introduction The Second Amendment of the American constitution allows citizens to bear arms (Gramlich & Schaeffer). Gun control and safety policies elicit different reactions from different people. The issue of gun ownership remains a highly debatable issue at political, community and individual levels. Gun control policy seeks to restrict gun ownership by tightening laws on gun ownership. Issues such as strict eligibility requirements such as mental health, restricted seller authorization, the ban on particular firearms, to name a few, have elicited debate. Parties that believe in individual protection in a society where the government has failed to protect its citizens adequately are of a contrary opinion. Restricting gun ownership for law-abiding citizens who need protection is seen as an abuse of human rights (“Issue: Gun Control”). The varied opinions and beliefs as concerns gun control are based on cognitive biases that exist at individual and society level. Biases affect thought patterns and decision making. The paper seeks to focus on types of biases as well as reasons for the…
Major Research Essay Introduction Feminism can be said to depict a political, cultural, social or economic change planned for setting up corresponding rights and legitimate assurance for women (Brunell & Burkett, 2019). Women’s rights include cultural and sociological beliefs, and methods of reasoning worried about issues of sex distinction, just as a movement that advocates gender equality for women and movements for ladies’ privileges and interests. Despite the expressions “feminism” and “feminist” not commonly used until the 1970s, they were being utilized in the public speeches and talks much earlier. I have chosen my two key thinkers, famous philosophers and feminists, Simone de Beauvoir and Angela McRobbie. These two women are known for their writings on how they viewed and supported feminism in various ways. This research essay seeks to analyse and discuss Simone de Beauvoir and Angela McRobbie work on feminism and how they have helped us to acknowledge the relationship between feminism and society and culture. Simone de Beauvoir Simone de Beauvoir was a philosopher, political activist as well as feminist. Beauvoir’s technique involved different political and ethical perspectives.…
Just Mercy review From the movie “Just Mercy,” I have learned that injustice can happen to even the most innocent person. In the film, Walter McMillan alias Johnny D was convicted to death by the court of Alabama for a murder he had never committed. The law enforcement officers assumed that he was the person who murdered Ronda Morrison. Despite there being tangible evidence and even eyewitnesses who provided testimony in favor of Johnny D, he was still incarcerated. He suffered emotional and mental torture, knowing that he had not committed any crime, yet he was given the worst of all punishments; death sentence. From viewing the movie, I learned that racial discrimination is still an issue in the United States. In the whole investigation process, the police were convinced that the only person to commit such a heinous act could only be a black person. The police disregard the testimony of Johnny D’s family and friends who placed him at a different location during the time of the murder. The cops still chose to ignore their statement. The police…
understanding of social justice Many Americans find it quite challenging to reconcile their understanding of social justice with the fact that at least 35 million people, both dependents and employed, are unable to access primary healthcare. It is commendable that the government and health agencies and individuals are trying to keep up with the increasing requests for the services amid the budget constraints. Not only are Americans losing their insurance coverage due to the restraining policies, but the size of the vulnerable population of Americans is also growing. One big challenge in the endeavor to ensure justice is realized in the country is the poor access to healthcare. Barriers to access to healthcare include the high cost of care and no insurance and coverage as well as the poor availability of services. This jeopardizes the principle of social justice that is one of the ethical principles of health service delivery. Besides, the size of the workforce is also quite variable in relation to the size of the population. Notably, the size is quite unreasonable in the care for the older…
The Civil Justice Reform It is worth noting that the Civil Justice Reform has effectively curbed the adversarial excesses in the Hong Kong civil procedural system. The results of this reform are evident in the area of procedural efficiency and particularly in the defense sector. For instance, the period of time for defense service has been revised from 14 days to 28 days, which is perceived to be a more realistic period to obviate the need for many applications for an extension of time. However, this is perceived to slow the time within which the judgement in default of defense can be obtained. The post CJR rules have enhanced the reduction of delay in executing cases. Perhaps, before the CJR, many courts have been reluctant of executing duties, which in turn enhanced delay of procedures of executing cases. The implementation of CJR has quickened the pace of litigation due to the introduction of case management powers, which ensures all the cases are handled at a stipulated time[1]. This has reduced the accumulation of cases and waiting time for the ceases…
