Chapter 5 Class Participation
Marcy is at the tertiary circular reaction sub-stage, which is experienced at 12-18 months of age. At this stage, she is at the beginning of toddlerhood, and she is keen on exploring the world and learning more (Santrock, 2019). The situation is shown by planning, coordination, and experimentation. An instance is shown in the way Marcy was interested in seeing what would happen if she poured food on her puppy’s head.
Babies first begin to imitate at the secondary circular reactions sub-stage. It is experienced when they are aged 4-8 months old. They start becoming aware of their surroundings and would, therefore, start to attempt to mimic the behaviors and sounds which they see around them (Santrock, 2019). The imitation becomes more pronounced as they continue to develop. Imitation is biologically preprogrammed. Once babies attain the secondary circular reactions stage, it is highly likely that they will start to imitate what they see around them.
Telegraphic speech is a form of communication consisting of two-word long sentences. These words are often a noun and a verb that adhere to the grammatical standards of a culture’s language. An example is where a baby says, “take banana” (Santrock, 2019). The statement communicates the intention of the child, but it is at its basic level. Telegraphic speech often denotes the initial stages of speech development in a toddler, which shows that they are on their right path towards managing to communicate clearly.
Child-directed speech is any form of variation in speech patterns used by parents or caregivers when communicating with children. One form of child-directed speech is recasting, where the speaker rephrases something a child has said (Santrock, 2019). The statement might have lacked the appropriate morphology or have some error in it, and so, the adult corrected it. A second form is expanding where one adds information the a child’s incomplete utterance. A third form is labeling where one names objects which a child appears to be interested in.
