In 2005, Wild was the first person to define exposome as ‘the sum of environmental exposures, and individual is subjected to from conception to death.’ The term was refined in 2014 by Miller and Jones, who defined exposome as ‘the cumulative measure of environmental influences and the associated biological response thought the lifespan, including exposures from environmental, diet, behavior, and endogenous processes.’ From the two definitions, exposome is thus the totality of exposures to which an individual is subjected from conception to death. It also includes the response of the human body to such factors, which are both internal and external.

Skin exposome

Skin is the protective layer that protects the body from the external environment, and as such exposome affects skin aging. Studies conducted by Krutmann et al. show that environmental factors affecting skin aging exposome are grouped into six categories shown below:

  1. Sun radiation: This includes ultraviolet and infrared radiation and visible light.
  2. Smoking: tobacco affects the skin.

Acne exposome is the sum of all environmental factors influencing the occurrence, duration, and severity of acne. The following six environmental factors affect skin exposome:

  1. Nutrition: daily products such as skimmed milk and hyperglycemic carbohydrates whey protein containing leucine stimulates production of IGF-1, insulin growth factor-1, which causes acne.
  2. Medications: it is a known fact that contraceptives are a major cause of acne in females. In first and second-generation oral contraceptives, progestin metabolizes to testosterone that aggravates acne. Besides, radiotherapy, certain anti-cancer agents, immunosuppressants, halogens, and other medications cause acne.
