Paraphrased Assignment
Introduction
A recently concluded research revealed that majority of English learning students who learn English as a foreign language lack motivation in their studies, and this has prompted many researchers and scholars to delve into research in order to identify the root causes. The research revealed that some of the factors
that had resulted in the lack of motivation included; long and complex English curriculum, lack of use of English as teaching language and undesirable interest of students towards their English tutors or instructors.
Discussion
One key factor that contributed to the demotivation of English learning students was long and complex English curriculum, and this impeded comprehensive learning of the language. The use of long curriculum meant that some of the students lost their motivation of learning the language. Consequently, they stopped paying attention to what they were taught by their tutors. Besides the long curriculum, some students lamented that the curriculum used complex language and words that they were unable to apprehend (Talebinezhad & Aliakbari,2001). Notably, the students ended up understanding little or nothing at the end of each session. The questioned students acknowledged that there was a need for the English department to revise the curriculum and make sure it meets the student’s learning needs. Additionally, the students noted that there should be participation between the students and the English department before settling for learning materials, specifically books to ensure that the selected English books met the interests and objectives of the students.. Another key contributing factor was the rare use of English as teaching language. It was ironically reported that some teachers used Arabic language while teaching English. Consequently, student’s involvement and interaction during class sections was limited. Students commented that there was need for their teachers to use English language for them to reap more from the class sessions. In addition, other students lamented that there was a need for joint effort between teachers and departmental members to offer students training sessions to sensitize them on working together with other students, and this involved the suggestion of forming groups. Talebinezhad & Aliakbari (2001), states that forming groups would help students perfect in English speaking skills and adequately exploit more opportunities in the outside world.
Additionally, it was revealed that majority of the students had developed negative interests towards their teachers. As a result of the negative interests towards the teachers, understanding of the English language was made difficult. To counter such effect, students called upon their leaders to recollect themselves to prevent further disappointments with the students because it was negatively affecting the students (Talebinezhad & Aliakbari, 2001). Also, some students stated that there should be regular class discussions with the teachers whereby the students would reveal the reasons behind the negative interests, and the teachers would then work on improving themselves. Other students advocated for the need of evaluation sheets at the end of the semester, where the teacher will get important points from the students.
Conclusion
There is need for teachers to ensure that English learning students adequately benefit from the English classes, and one way of ensuring this is through the use of English as teaching language. Students will have a comprehensive understanding of the taught content. Teacher need to realize that Arab students are blank in English content and using Arabic language to teach English is in vain. Additionally, teachers despite the level of education, need to be committed towards imparting English knowledge to their students. Students, on their side, should be optimistic with their teachers and stop demeaning them for, and this will help them understand that whatever they are being taught is of significant value.
Recommendations for More Research
Regarding the research findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are provided for more research;
- Addition of questionnaire documents and extension of the research to cover more different groups in order to guarantee authenticity of the research findings.
- More data collection methods such as interviewing of students or organizing competitions for English language skills specifically for adult students, and this will help get reliable and varied results.
