Problem Statement

The problem statement to be explored in this researchers is that Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) are susceptible to internet attacks and disruptions because of the availability of affordable software tools such as software-defined radios (Gurtor & Wernberg, 2018). The attacks predispose the aeroplanes to air traffic which could eventually result in fatal plane crashes that may cost the lives of many passengers and cabin crew. The CPDLC is a significant aeronautical internet technology that allows flight controllers to communicate with the pilots through data links. Moreover, CPDLC is an alternative medium of communication after the very high-frequency radios (VHF) which are more prone to excess air traffic. The study will, therefore, identify the various properties of CPDLC to establish possible threats and propose the necessary solutions (Osechas & Meurer, 2017)..

Air traffic management systems require the utmost protection and expertise to reduce the cases of hacking and network disruptions. The CPDLC seeks to reduce sound traffic on video frequency, but hackers can bypass the network and interfere with the controller-pilot communications. Internet attacks may include communication interception and interference, congestions, data modification and phishing (Judd & Gupta, 2017). The proposed study will, therefore, explore the potential harms and establish a threat system. Additionally, the study will analyze the different options to address the gaps present in CPDLC, for example, the elliptical curve cryptography, which allows the flight controllers and pilots to communicate through codes. The proposed review will also examine the relevance of adopting protected-aircraft communication addressing and reporting systems and host identity protocols as alternative solutions.

Lastly, the study seeks to deliberate whether identity-defined network (IDN) can be useful in reducing the risks of CPDLC attacks. Airport security is an essential role in the aviation industry and involves collaborations with different airports and nations.
