Zoonosis Summary
Zoonosis refers to infectious diseases which are caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Animals typically spread these infectious diseases to human beings. Several studies have been conducted about zoonosis. Liu et al. (2015), surveyed human sparganosis in China. Human sparganosis is the waterborne parasitic infection that is caused by plerocercoid larvae of the genus Spirometra. The disease was first discovered in China in1882, but the first human case was reported in 1908 in Florida. According to Liu et al., (2015), the infection is transmitted by consuming contaminated water. It can also be passed by eating an infected frog or snake. The disease is also spread through open wounds or mucous membrane.
This study is relevant to human health because it gives an insight into how this disease is spread. In remote areas of China, frogs and snakes are delicacies, and therefore there is a possibility of human beings getting infected with the virus. Some people also keep frogs and snakes as pets. Due to the diversity in the modern world, people are experimenting with new delicacies. This study highlights the importance of being vigilant to avoid getting infected. Those who keep frogs and snakes as pets should ensure that they are free from the disease to prevent infection. People should also exercise caution, so when they have open wounds to avoid contamination. The study is essential for medical practitioners when they are doing their prognosis. They can assess some of the symptoms of sparganosis like a painful nodule.
Another study that is relevant to human health is that carried out by Scanes (2018) about animals and human diseases. Scanes gives a detailed account of zoonosis, vectors, foodborne illnesses, and allergies. Coming into contact with animals causes different types of allergies such as skin irritation, sneezing, eye irritability (Scanes, 2018). Scanes found out that people do not associate the allergies they suffer from with the animals they keep or get into contact with. Most of the allergies are caused by the fur from animals like cats and dogs. However, animals like goats, cows, and rabbits can also trigger allergic reactions.
The relevance of this study in human health is that it will help the medical doctors in the prognosis of diseases. When dealing with cases of allergic reactions, doctors mainly question common pets such as cats and dogs. The findings from this study show that other r animals like goats, sheep, and rabbits can also cause allergic reactions. With this knowledge, medical practitioners will widen the scope of their prognosis. The study also opens up an opening for more research on animal and human diseases. There is room for conducting more research on treatment and prevention of allergies that are caused by animals.
From the above two studies, it is evident that conservation is likely to increases zoonosis. Preservation of a variety of animals, especially at home or near human residents can expose humans to zoonosis. Domestic animals like dogs and cats can cause numerous diseases to human beings. These animals are also responsible for causing allergic reactions to humans. Animals like frogs and snakes also spread sparganosis to humans. Wild animals can also spread diseases to human beings. Conserving animals in a zoo can lead to an outbreak of diseases in these zoos can expose human who interacts with these animals to zoonosis. The animal should be regularly vaccinated and dewormed from time to time to prevent them from getting infected and subsequently passing the disease to human beings. Humans should also be cautious when interacting with animals.
