There are several Wireless Personal area Network (WPAN) developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for personal use. Each standard is designed and labelled differently to distinguish high and low rate Wireless Personal Area Networks. Therefore, a digit is always located at the last of the name of each standard to identify its category. The Bluetooth is assigned number “1” and Zigbee “4”. IrDA
IrDa is interoperable and low-cost infrared data. It comprises a set of protocols that support computing, communication devices, among others. The protocols in this standard focus on the provision of high speed, point to point, line of sight wireless data transfer in a short-range. This type of WPAN standard, therefore, transmits data using infrared light waves from one device to another wirelessly. No cables are needed and operates smoothly given the range is short like at home or open office (Gutierrez et al. 2004).
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a WPAN standard 205.15.1 as per the IEEE. It is globally used in Bluetooth enabled devices such as cellphones, iPod, laptops, computers, printers keyboards, mouse among others. This standard is easier to set up and includes a few processes referred to as protocol stack (Gutierrez et al. 2004). Bluetooth standard includes the following levels to connect and operate successfully.
- The Bluetooth RF layer
- Bluetooth power classes and range
- Bluetooth baseband layer
- Radiofrequency
- Bluetooth connection procedure
- Bluetooth frames
- Bluetooth Link Manager Layer
- Bluetooth Profiles.
These protocols enable Bluetooth enables devices to send and receive data which is transmitted in the form of radio waves. The connections range is short, and therefore the receiving devices are required to be within the sender proximity (Gutierrez et al. 2004).
Zigbee
This WPAN standard enables users to transmit data wirelessly between stationary devices such as remote controls due to their very low rates (20kbps-250Kbps). Their power consumption rate is low and can transmit data within a range of 10-50 meters. Wireless remote controls often use Zigbee as a mode of connectivity due to less data transmission and power (Yang & Yu, 2009).
